Roof Flashing

Roof flashing is helpful in giving extra protection to your roof. It prevents water from leaking on the roof, therefore protecting the inside of your house. It’s placed in between the main roofing material and roofing shingles.

Roof flashing must be installed correctly to prevent leaks. Since it’s exposed to different weather conditions, it needs to be durable, weather resistant, low maintenance and can be moved easily if roof expansion is needed. There are different roof flashing materials that you can use like slate, steel and copper. Slate flashing is a good material when it comes to durability and weather resistance. However, repair of slate flashing is expensive.  If you’re looking for a flashing material that’s easy to install and doesn’t cost much, use steel flashing. Some of the disadvantages of using this are steel flashing is not as durable as the other materials so it can easily get damaged with constant weather change and it’s more susceptible to corrosion.

Regular checking and maintenance must be done to prevent damages on your steel flashing. It can also be painted or you can apply special coating for more protection. Copper flashing is the most durable material. It’s sure to last for years and will not easily be damaged. It’s also weather resistant and is not easily susceptible to corrosion. But this type of material is the most expensive of all flashing materials. You can install roof flashing by yourself or you can hire a professional contractor to do the job for you. If you’re confident that you can properly install the flashing of your roof, measure the part of your roof that will need flashing to determine the size of flashing you need to buy.

Since proper installation of roof flashing is needed to provide maximum protection, call a professional contractor if you’re not sure how to do the installation.
